PERSONALIZED SUPPORT

Private 1-on-1 Tutoring

Why is 1-on-1 tutoring important?

Every child has different strengths and areas where they need additional support. Private tutoring gives your child focused attention and instruction built around their individual reading level, learning needs, and progress.

✓ Individual Attention — Your child's session focuses specifically on the skills they need to strengthen.

✓ Learn at Their Level — Reading materials and activities are selected based on your child's current ability, including their Lexile level when available.

✓ Progress at Their Pace — As your child builds stronger skills, instruction and reading materials can become more challenging.

Saturday Group Tutoring

Why is group tutoring important?

Children can learn from more than just the tutor. Small-group tutoring gives students opportunities to discuss what they read, hear different ideas, explain their thinking, and build confidence while learning alongside other children.

✓ Build Reading Confidence — Students practice reading, answering questions, and sharing their thinking in a supportive environment.

✓ Learn From Others — Group discussion allows students to hear different perspectives and strengthen comprehension.

✓ Practice Communication — Students build confidence explaining answers, discussing texts, and expressing their ideas.

Understanding Your Child's Reading Progress

Assess. Teach. Practice. Monitor. Grow.

What Is a Lexile Measure?

A Lexile measure is a scientific approach to measuring both reading ability and the difficulty of reading materials. It is represented as a number followed by an 'L' (e.g., 880L). Instead of a broad grade level, it provides a precise metric that allows us to see exactly how complex a text is and how well a student can comprehend it.

Note: If your child does not have a Lexile measure, I use other standardized assessment data and my own qualitative screenings to determine their starting point.

How I Use Lexile Information
  • Precise Book Matching: I select 'sweet spot' texts (usually 100L below to 50L above their measure) to ensure they are challenged but not frustrated.
  • Tracking Real Growth: Lexile measures are independent of grade levels, so we can see numeric proof of progress even within a single grading period.
  • Daily Success: When a child reads text at their Lexile level, they are likely to have a 75% comprehension rate—the ideal level for building new skills.

Example Targeted Tracking: Making Inferences

Student identifies what the character is feeling based on their actions in a 450L text with 80% accuracy over 3 consecutive sessions.

What Does Progress Monitoring Look Like?

*Disseminated and explained reading metrics are shared with parents monthly to show specific skill growth.

At Tay K6 Tutoring, literacy growth is about more than just reading words on a page. It's about building a deeper understanding of how language works. I use standard reading assessment information and Lexile measures to understand where your child is starting and select reading materials and activities that match their current abilities and learning needs.

My approach combines skill-based instruction with consistent progress monitoring. By identifying specific areas that need improvement, such as phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, and making inferences, I can provide targeted support to help students strengthen their skills. This personalized approach allows us to recognize progress, celebrate achievements, and continue working toward long-term academic goals.
